Just over two weeks ago took some cuttings from a basil plant and a mint plant. (You can see how I did it in this post). The cuttings grew new roots and today I potted them on. I do have some little plastic plant pots, but once again, I took inspiration from Gardeners’ World which suggested using empty loo rolls. This is an excellent way of recycling, and because cardboard degrades quickly and harmlessly, it means that when the herbs need potting on again, I can plant the tubes directly into a larger pot. They will give the plants extra support should they need it.
In this instance, I used an empty wrapping paper tube, but the principle is the same. I cut it into shorter lengths then cut the bottom to help the tubes to stay upright.
I filled to half way with compost, then watered it.
Next, I put the cuttings in and filled around them with more compost. I gave them another water and let them stand for about half an hour.
Next, I transferred to a smaller tray to bring indoors. (Just because it looks a bit nicer).
Mint is hardy so ultimately, I’ll plant it outdoors when it next needs potting on, but keep it in a pot. It grows very quickly and vigorously; the pot will contain it. Basil is more tender and won’t survive outdoors. I’m going to take successional cuttings with the aim of growing a constant supply because I love and use basil so much.
